Inter’s charge towards the Serie A title this season has come as no shock to former Palermo and Roma full-back Federico Balzaretti, who feels they were always the favourites.

Antonio Conte’s side can regain their 11-point advantage over AC Milan with a victory over Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona this evening and are closing in on a first league title since 2010.

Appearing as a guest on the Radio Bianconera podcast, and as reported by L’Interista.it, Balzaretti praised Conte and felt that his continued work from last season made the Nerazzurri the best equipped team to win the title.

“I made Inter the favourites for the Scudetto because they are in the second year, after one of consolidation,” Balzaretti stated.

“Juventus have worked to rejuvenate their squad, but players like [Dejan] Kulusevski and [Federico] Chiesa will have to start a second cycle. I think [Atalanta’s Robin] Gosens is destined to make the leap to a bigger team.”

Inter go into the match in Naples having enjoyed 11 consecutive victories and are just 13 points away from securing the title.

Former Italy international Balzaretti made 39 appearances during an injury-hit three year stint with Roma between 2012 and 2015, having previously represented Palermo and Juventus.
