Nicolo Barella would clearly be a popular choice to become Inter’s next captain, as explained by a report from a leading Italian broadcaster today.

Sky Sport Italia revealed the midfielder was involved in a pleasant exchange outside Appiano Gentile after Inter finished training earlier.

Barella stopped outside the gates to take socially distanced selfies with Inter supporters, at which point one of them cried: “You must become captain.”

The 24-year-old offered a typically humble response, shaking his head and telling the fans: “We have Samir Handanovic.”

Barella’s nomination from the Inter fans is a sign of how much he has entered into supporters’ hearts since his €40 million move from Cagliari in 2019.

A report last week claimed Inter would pick either him or Milan Skriniar to replace Handanovic as captain when the moment came, but for now Barella is not thinking about it.

Sky noted that it was Barella who seemed most determined for Inter to find a winning goal during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Spezia, urging his teammates on at the Stadio Alberto Picco along with Romelu Lukaku.

Barella has scored three goals and provided 10 assists for Inter in all competitions this season.
