Steven Zhang must not allow Inter’s squad to be weakened in the summer, a report in the Italian media argued today.

As per Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition, Zhang is due to return to Milan on Thursday after several months away from the club due to COVID-19 restrictions.

He is expected to soon secure the financing Inter need in order to address their short-term financial concerns, but now he has another duty to Antonio Conte and the Nerazzurri’s supporters.

“We’ve never believed here that Suning intended to sell Inter, but now Zhang has a new and different responsibility,” Stefano Barigelli wrote in his latest column.

“Winning the Serie A title brings with it an obligation to maintain the squad at this level and perhaps to improve it.”

Inter are four points away from securing their first Serie A title since 2010, and it would become official as early as Sunday if they beat Crotone and Atalanta slip up at Sassuolo.

Barigelli argued that Conte’s side would win the scudetto because they had wanted it more than their rivals, finding ways to deal with their limitations and working to improve themselves on a daily basis.

“Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella’s development will be precious for Roberto Mancini at the European Championships,” he added.

“Romelu Lukaku is one of the best strikers in the world and Lautaro Martinez is a different player compared to the one that was on the bench under Luciano Spalletti.

“Conte is right; it would be a shame for him to throw all this work away and start from zero somewhere else.”
