Inter’s hopes of building a new San Siro with AC Milan are probably being blocked for political reasons, a report in the Italian media explained today.

Gazzetta.it said Inter’s stadium plans would be one of the key issues on Steven Zhang’s agenda after he arrived back in Milan this afternoon.

Zhang was warned by Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala on Tuesday that, in order for the San Siro project to proceed, Suning would need to confirm they would stay in charge at Inter for another three years.

However, this report said the problem was more likely to be political, with Sala reluctant to take a public stance on the matter until after October’s council elections.

Zhang has an interest in meeting Sala in order to resolve the impasse, the Milan-based publication argued, but that is not the only issue on his to-do list upon his return to Milan.

Inter will also continue their search for a new main shirt sponsor to replace Pirelli, with Suning said to be in talks with two groups over a deal worth €20-25 million (more than double what Pirelli are paying the Nerazzurri).

Zhang is also thought to be on the verge of securing a loan deal worth €250-300 million from Bain Capital, which will help ease Inter’s ongoing financial problems.
