Inter were once again invited to clarify their ownership situation by Milan’s city mayor Giuseppe Sala today.

The Nerazzurri are struggling to make any progress in their plans to build a new stadium with AC Milan, with Sala arguing he needs greater certainty over Suning’s future at the club before the project can proceed.

Inter and AC Milan are planning to spend €1.2 billion to create the new San Siro, but their plans also involve a major redevelopment project of the surrounding area.

“The clubs’ project requires us to grant them permission to work on council-owned territory,” Sala told reporters today (via ilfattoquotidiano.it), in reference to the clubs’ plans to redevelop the area surrounding the new stadium.

“The stadium is only 50% of what they want to build.

“It’s (only) common sense to ask for the identity of those who are putting themselves forward as partners for the council, for a development project of this scale.

“These are works that would take four or five years to complete.”

A report in Italy earlier warned that Inter would need to use diplomacy to repair their relations with Sala, after they launched a scathing attack on the mayor last month.

Sala is prepared to meet Inter in order to sort out any concerns relating to the project, but he reportedly wants the Nerazzurri to make the first move after the parties’ recent tensions.
