Javier Zanetti has moved swiftly to clarify comments he made about Suning after suggesting they ‘could have sold Inter’ midway through this season.

Inter’s vice-president gave a long interview to Argentine publication La Nacion today in which he was reported as having said: ‘The club could have been sold because they were experiencing big financial problems.’

Pupi has since tried to distance himself from those claims though, offering a brief statement to Italian news agency ANSA (via FcInterNews.it).

“My comments in relation to the owners were misreported,” Zanetti insisted.

“On the contrary, I said that the owners had always continued to support the club despite the global economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

During his interview, Zanetti admitted Inter had serious financial problems to solve with the Nerazzurri suffering losses higher than €102 million (a figure reported by some sources).

He argued it would take a couple of years to restore a level of normality at the club, who have been badly hit by the pandemic since its outbreak last year.

Zanetti also heaped praise on Antonio Conte, after he led Inter back to the Serie A title, and told fans the best was still to come from Lautaro Martinez.
