Romelu Lukaku believes Inter’s derby defeat to AC Milan in October ‘energised’ them to become Serie A champions.

As part of their matchday programme for Sunday’s game with Udinese, the Nerazzurri asked each of their players to pick a ‘Scudetto moment’ where something decisive happened.

Nicolo Barella picked Inter’s 2-0 win over Juventus in January, while Milan Skriniar selected the victory over Atalanta where he scored the winner.

Lukaku went for a more left-field choice though, arguing: “It might seem strange, but I’ll pick the first Milan derby of the season (where Inter lost 2-1 to AC Milan in October).

“We knew we were the better team.

“That match gave us the energy to begin our journey towards the Scudetto.”

Lautaro Martinez also picked a match against AC Milan, but El Toro went for their 3-0 win in the reverse fixture back in February.

The Argentine scored twice in that game before Lukaku added a third with a fantastic individual goal on the counter-attack.

“I have no doubt that my choice is the 3-0 win over AC Milan,” Lautaro said.

“In that match you saw all the team’s hunger to win, to fight together.

“We showed our strength as a group and it was a privilege to be a key player in that game by scoring a double.”

Elsewhere, Stefano Sensi joined Barella in picking the win against Juventus while Stefan de Vrij backed his fellow defender Skriniar by choosing Atalanta at home.

Roberto Gagliardini went for a different option, choosing the 3-0 win at Sassuolo in November in which he scored.
