Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has commented on the tactical significance of Hakan Calhanoglu’s signing for Inter.

Writing on his website, the FootballItalia transfer market expert explained how he thought the the 27-year-old Turkish playmaker is a versatile option who could lend himself to different systems, formations, and approaches.

This kind of versatility will be important for the Nerazzurri as they look to settle into a new style and run of form under new manager Simone Inzaghi.

Pedulla compares the Turk’s style of play at Milan under two different managers, and believes that he would be a perfect option to replicate the contributions of one of Inzaghi’s most important players from his time at the Biancocelesti – Spanish midfielder Luis Alberto.

Pedulla predicts the role for Calhanoglu in the 3-5-2 formation typically employed by Inzaghi, and is optimistic about the future for the now-former AC Milan player under the Italian tactician as the pair each look to launch their Nerazzurri careers.

Pedulla explains:

“The timing was perfect. Beppe Marotta, with the purchase of Calhanoglu, made a quality and talented player available to Inzaghi.”

He describes Calhanoglu as a “wild card” for the new Inter manager, writing:

“At Milan he played a bit in all the roles: As an attacking winger under Gattuso, then as a midfielder and finally as an attacking midfielder under Pioli in the 4-2-3-1.”

Relating this to new Inter coach Inzaghi, Pedulla explains:

“A key position in the 3-5-2 formation which Inzaghi usually employs is that of the mezzala, similar to the role played by Luis Alberto at Lazio.”
