Tottenham and Wales defender Ben Davies has revealed the contents of a conversation he had with Inter midfielder and Denmark captain Christian Eriksen.
Speaking to BBC Sport as reported by FCInterNews, the defender talked about his contacts with Eriksen, in the wake of the 29-year-old’s health emergency during Denmark’s EURO 2020 opener against Finland.
Davies and Eriksen are former teammates, with the pair having played together for Tottenham for four and a half seasons after the 28-year-old Welshman joined the club in 2014.
Despite no longer playing together, the two still keep in touch, and the situation with Eriksen having experienced a cardiac arrest was obviously greatly concerning to Davies.
The former teammates would have been set to face off on Saturday in the round-of-sixteen clash between Denmark, but the Inter man is ruled out for the rest of the tournament though the Danish captain is still supporting his team in his absence.
Speaking about his conversation with Eriksen Davies said this:
“We talked before the match between Denmark and Russia, he said that [Denmark and Wales] will have a tough game.”
He continued: “I’ve talked to him a couple times since. He seems to be in a good mood. I don’t know what’s going to happen from here, but I think it’s best to let him have his privacy, let him spend time with his family. The most important thing is that he’s still alive.”
Speaking about his reaction to the moment in which Eriksen collapsed during the Finland Match, Davies said the following:
“It was a horrible thing. He’s a good friend and I didn’t know what was going on. I was on the phone with many of our mutual friends. We were a little worried and panicked at that time.”
“It was pretty tough, but the guys were great to be honest. The footballing side is completely irrelevant when these things happen. The only thing that matters is that he’s alive and will be there for his family.”
