Ajax Sporting Director Marc Overmars has given an update about the situation of Inter-linked goalkeeper Andre Onana, who he states will not have his contract extended past next summer.

Speaking to Dutch media before his team’s Champions League match against Besiktas, as reported by FCInter1908, Overmars explained that the Dutch champions are no longer intending to find an agreement on a new deal with the 25-year-old.

Onana has been heavily linked with Inter, with the Cameroonian reportedly one of the Nerazzurri’s main targets in their search for a long-term successor to Samir Handanovic.

With his contract set to expire at the end of June 2022, Onana can leave his club as a free agent next summer, and as Overmars explained, a renewal does not look to be likely.

It remains to be seen whether the Cameroonian ultimately finds an agreement with Inter or with another club, but it now appears that his future is away from Ajax.

“We are not working on the renewal of Andre Onana’s contract,” Overmars stated. “We have already tried and it has not worked out, so we have moved on. An agreement had been made that would have included a transfer in the summer, this did not happen and it was not our fault.”

He went on, “Andre Onana said in an interview last week that we have withdrawn from trying to renew his contract. And yes, that’s true. But we did so with reason.”
