Inter have played three European matches under Danny Makkelie, the referee assigned to Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Sheriff Tiraspol, and their record has seen them win once and lose twice.
This fact his highlighted by Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who note that the Nerazzurri will have to hope that they can improve this record under the Dutch referee against Sheriff.
The last time Makkelie officiated an Inter match, the Nerazzurri were on the winning side, overturning German team Borussia Monchengladbach in the group stage of last year’s Champions League.
However, both previous matches refereed by the Dutchman have been losses, namely the 2019-20 Europa League final against Sevilla and before that a group stage clash with Borussia Dortmund.
The Nerazzurri will need to find a win against Sheriff if they want to get their Champions League group stage campaign for this season back on track, having collected only a point in their first two matches, and they will hope that they can fare better than their track record under Makkelie.
