Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne is moving closer to the exit door at the Partenopei amid interest in his signature from Inter.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the 30-year-old finding an agreement on a renewal at his current club looks less and less likely, and that he could sign for the Nerazzurri on a free transfer next summer.

Insigne’s current deal is set to run out at the end of June 2022, and he has yet to find an agreement on an extension with his club, who are currently unwilling to meet his financial demands.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has recently made statements where he appears to put the blame onto the 30-year-old and suggests that the club have done everything they could to keep hold of their captain.

The Partenopei could still propose a larger offer in the spring should they be mathematically guaranteed participation in next season’s Champions League, and the player could prefer to stay at his boyhood club and play in Europe’s top competition.

However, there is still no guarantee that the negotiations could progress from where they are currently at, even in such an eventuality, and the 30-year-old could instead leave as a free agent next summer.

Should Insigne depart, Inter would be one of the main clubs interested in his signature, with the Nerazzurri having already considered trying to sign him in the summer before moving for other attacking targets.

The Nerazzurri could resume their interest in Insigne next summer when he is available on a free transfer, in which case they would be able to offer him better economic terms than the Partenopei.
