Inter coach Simone Inzaghi knows that his side need to take advantage of opportunities to catch up to the leaders of Serie A and is not happy with having dropped points in their 1-1 draw with AC Milan in the derby.

Speaking in a press conference as reported by FCInter1908, the coach emphasized that the draw feels like points lost rather than a point gained given the need to get themselves back to the top of Serie A.

Inter had a chance to reduce the gap with their city rivals to just four points, and would have also come within five points of Napoli, who they face next in Serie A, after the Partenopei drew with Verona earlier on.

However, the Nerazzurri had to settle for sharing the points with the Rossoneri after a Stefan de Vrij own goal cancelled out a Hakan Calhanoglu penalty and Inzaghi’s men were unable to find a way to regain the lead despite having probed for another goal for much of the match.

“I think that if we look at the latest matches against Juventus and Milan, against two great teams, we would have deserved another result,” he stated. “We have to improve, that’s how it goes right now. It is normal for a game played like this to give us awareness but clearly we want to win because we are late and we want to shorten the gap.”

On the missed penalty by Lautaro Martinez he stated that “We know the attackers live in moments. Once every shot was a goal, now he hits the post, misses a penalty and the goalkeeper works a miracle. He must continue to work like this and his situation will be resolved as soon as possible.”

“Our penalty takers are Lautaro, Calhanoglu, and Perisic,” he went on. “Lautaro is the first, tonight Calhanoglu wanted to take the first and the second Lautaro took. I think there is a clear hierarchy, the players on the pitch live in feelings and moments.”

“It was a good Inter,” Inzaghi reflected. “We had done better against Real, even with Lazio we had played very well. We approached the first quarter of an hour and the last ten badly, but we created a lot against a very strong and organized team. The performance gives us confidence, there are still 26 games to go.”

“We hope that the players who came off do not have any major problems because in fifteen days we will be playing another important game,” he continued.

The coach concluded that “I’m not happy with the result, we deserved more for the missed penalty. Then I see strong opponents who are having an amazing season. This is a game that gives us courage, we know that we have to close the gap on these teams who are having an impressive season.”
