Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni feels that his team deserved more out of their 1-1 draw with AC Milan in the derby, given the chances that they created in the match.

Speaking to InterTV after the match, the 22-year-old reflected on an evening in which the Nerazzurri put in a strong performance in the derby but were unable to get three points to catch up to their rivals after a number of missed opportunities.

Inter played with the initiative for much of the encounter, and after their early lead through a Hakan Calhanoglu penalty was cancelled out by a Stefan de Vrij own goal they once again had the chance to go ahead from the spot, but this time Lautaro Martinez had his shot saved by Ciprian Tatarusanu.

From here on, the Nerazzurri also created some other good opportunities as they looked to play at a good pace, but they were unable to find the back of the net, while their city rivals also came close to a late win through an Alexis Saelemaekers shot which struck the post.

“Tonight we deserved something more,” Bastoni stated, “there were many matches in the same match. We could have scored 2-3 goals and then we saw a Saelemaekers shot hit the post. In my opinion we could have won the game, but when you can’t, it’s important to at least draw.”

“We are still in the running in all competitions,” he went on, “even last year we had a great gap to make up against Milan. Of course it’s been hard to play every three days for two years. We have to move forward with our ideas and principles to continue doing well.”

On the Nerazzurri’s poor result in head-to-head matches with top sides he stated that “Surely it cannot be just bad luck, there are now 4-5 head-to-head clashes that we have not won, but we are satisfied with the matches. We have never been inferior to anyone, we must gain experience and be content.”
