Steps are being taken to make communication between the on-pitch referee and VAR in Serie A publicly available after controversies during the early rounds of Serie A.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, who report that former Serie A referee Antonio Giannocarro will be appointed as an intermediary between the Italian Referees Association and Serie A clubs, while explanations of decisions could also be broadcast on television.

A number of clubs and managers have expressed frustration with decisions that have gone against them in various Serie A matches this season, especially when VAR has been involved.

Questions have been raised about the standards being used by VAR and its usage has been criticized for inconsistency, with Inter having been particularly upset about a late penalty awarded by VAR’s intervention to Juventus which allowed the Bianconeri to equalize, for a clumsy challenge of the type which often results in no foul being given.

The controversies have put pressure on the Italian FA, and they look set to respond by having an intermediary so that clubs can voice their complaints and concerns.

Meanwhile, the broadcasting of certain decisions and explanations of why they were made is planned, with particular situations being highlighted by broadcasters from each round of matches with the aim of demonstrating the logic behind the decisions to audiences on television.
