Former Inter midfielder Benoit Cauet believes that the Milan derby between Inter and AC Milan on Sunday was an even and high-quality match, but that it was the Nerazurri who came closer to winning it.

Speaking to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, the French former midfielder gave the view that with the chances that they created throughout the encounter, his former side could have taken all three point rather than having to settle for a draw.

Both sides came into yesterday evening’s match understanding that apart from its status as a showpiece occasion of Italian football, it could be a hugely significant point in the Scudetto race.

The football played by both teams reflected this fact, as the pace and intensity of the game rarely let up and the Nerazzurri in particular looked absolutely determined to try and find a winner.

In the end, Inter were not able to break the deadlock, but Cauet feels that this was not for lack of trying and that they had the decisive advantage over their city rivals in terms of goal-scoring opportunities.

“The derby was very close, a good match. Inter had more chances,” he stated, “they could have brought home the three points.”

And on the Scudetto race he stated that “Whoever is in the lead has an advantage. Inter are third, Milan and Napoli are up there. But there is still a lot of hope. The hope is alive, Inter have the firepower to get closer. You need consistency and security in their means, the difference of points is based on Milan’s clinical edge.”
