Inter captain Samir Handanovic could remain at the club past next summer even with the club bringing in Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana as his long-term replacement.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who report that the Slovenian is considering staying in the squad to have a role alongside the Cameroonian.

Inter are ready to agree on a deal with Onana to sign the 25-year-old when he is out of contract with his current club next summer, and he is seen as the long-term successor to Handanovic in goal.

Handanovic is 37 and the club are aware of the needed to move on from him, and with the captain’s current deal set to expire at the end of June 2022 he could be on his way as early as next summer.

However, the club could also offer the 37-year-old an extension to stay while Onana finds his feet, similar to the arrangement that Juventus had when they kept Gianluigi Buffon on after signing Wojcjech Szczeszny from Roma.
