Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti does not believe that there is necessarily a reason to see Inter in the same bracket as league leaders AC Milan and Napoli in Serie A.

Writing in his column for Calciomercato.com, Sconcerti gave the view that the gap between the top two and Nerazzurri is still substantial and questioned whether the Nerazzurri should be thought of among the highest-performing teams in the league right now.

Inter have not had a bad start to the campaign as they look to defend last season’s Scudetto crown, with 25 points from their opening twelve games.

However, the Rossoneri and the Partenopei have enjoyed even better starts, each dropping only four points in the matches played so far.

For this reason, Sconcerti believes that it is now time to start thinking about Inter as being behind their rivals at the top at least until they can catch up.

He wrote that “I myself continue to see Inter as the team who are the point of reference, but there is something wrong with this calculation, seven points back at the top of the table is a lot in the standings.”

“Why do we continue to put Inter on the same level as Milan and Napoli?” he posed. “In football anything can happen, but is there any real reason for us to believe that things are different than they look in the table?”

“Last year, with a different team and up against a different Milan, it took 22 days to overtake Milan, who took the lead in the third week and remained at the top until the twenty-second game,” he pointed out.

He went on that “The highest gap that was ever between the two, not counting delays caused by COVID was five points.”
