Former Inter and Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta believes that Atalanta can get themselves into the Scudetto race alongside the top three sides in the Serie A table.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster 1 Station Radio, the former keeper gave the view that La Dei are the team who are capable of breaking into the group of the sides at the top as the season goes on.

Atalanta have impressed in recent seasons under Gian Piero Gasperini, making the Champions League places at the last three times of asking.

However, they have never quite had it in them to mount a serious title challenge, and this season appears to be more of the same with Gasperini’s men in a good position to compete for top four until the end of the season but some way off the top.

The Nerazzurri are the side closest to leaders AC Milan and Napoli with a seven-point gap, but Ballotta believes that it is still too early to rule La Dei out.

“There is still much left to be played, but right now Napoli, Milan and Inter seem uncatchable,” he stated. “In my opinion, Atalanta can join those three teams in the race, while for Juve only top four seems realistic.”
