Former Lazio and Napoli striker Bruno Giordano feels that Inter struggled to maintain Scudetto-winning form when they were without Marcelo Brozovic and Stefan de Vrij.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, Giordano highlighted the impact that losing the duo had to the Nerzzurri’s title hopes.

Inter fell to two consecutive 1-1 draws with Brozovic and de Vrij absent through injuries in the matches prior to the international break, while they had also lost to Sassuolo without Brozovic through suspension.

Giordano feels that this exposes a major fault with the Nerazzurri in terms of their capacity to go on and win the Serie A title.

If Brozovic and de Vrij can make decisive contributions in the last few matches of the campaign then they could very well push on to win the title ahead of AC Milan and Napoli, but they will also be hoping that these key players are at their best.

“Inter struggled when they were without Brozovic and de Vrij,” he said of the Scudetto race.

He added that “One of [Napoli’s] two rivals will go on in the Italian Cup and Napoli can take advantage of this waste of energy.”
