Roma head coach Jose Mourinho is disappointed not to have been able to take anything from his team’s Serie A clash with Inter, but will be rooting for his former side in the rest of the Scudetto race.

Speaking to InterTV after the match, Mourinho admitted that returning to the San Siro is always an emotional event for him, though he was clear that he was as committed to seeking a victory as he would be against any other opponent.

Inter beat Roma 3-1 to both give themselves another big boost in their pursuit of a second successive Serie A title, and to deal a damaging blow to the top four hopes of their former coach.

Mourinho’s Giallorossi side are chasing down Juventus in the last Champions League place and so the result will be a tough one for them to take given their ambitions.

However, given the Portuguese tactician’s history with the Nerazzurri, he admitted that there some lingering feelings that were not entirely focused on the result for the Giallorossi for him during the match.

“Returning to San Siro always makes me feel emotional,” he said, “but they know me well here and they know my nature perfectly.”

“I came here to win, there’s no other story,” he continued. “It was obvious that it was important to win for Inter but I’m not a liar, I also wanted to win.”

“We lost against a team stronger than us, who will surely win the Scudetto,” he continued. “We had a good match, we were a bit unlucky in not scoring an opening goal or making an impact on the counterattack, but it was a good match.”

“I thank the fans once again for the welcome and Forza Inter for the season finale, as well as for my team as well,” he added.

Mourinho reflected that “After three months without a defeat, a loss against a top team is acceptable. We now have to try to follow our dream which is to reach a European final, rest up and then try to make history if we can.”
