Inter could see signing Dries Mertens on a free transfer following his departure from Napoli as a low-cost replacement for Alexis Sanchez.
This according to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, who report that the Nerazzurri are thinking about a move for the 35-year-old but that they would only do so once Sanchez is off of their books.
Inter are working to convince Sanchez to leave this summer, with the Chilean their highest earner after Romelu Lukaku and not featuring in plans for next season.
This does not mean, however, that the Nerazzurri are not looking for another player with the right profile to play as a second striker in a front two, and they could look for a player who commands lower wages than Sanchez.
If Sanchez is to be on his way, the Nerazzurri would consider talks with Mertens, whose wage demands would likely not be unrealistic for the financial goals regarding the wage bill placed by Inter owners Suning.
