Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has weighed in on coach Simone Inzaghi’s statements that he hopes that no more major sales are made by the club this summer.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia ahead of this evening’s Serie A opener away to Lecce, Marotta explained that it’s not hard for him to see why Inzaghi is resistant to any more squad upheaval, whilst he also confirmed that the Nerazzurri are in search of one more defender.

A little over two weeks are left to go in the summer transfer window, and there is still a sense of uncertainty on how things will end up for the Nerazzurri.

However, Inzaghi’s words in a press conference yesterday gave a clear indication of what he is pushing the club to do, whilst captain Samir Handanovic also gave the same view earlier this evening.

Marotta understands why this is their view on a sporting level, noting that “Inzaghi’s words are understandable, he’s working every day with this team and it’s normal that he thinks this.”

“We have the obligation to guarantee both sustainability and a competitive team,” he noted. “There are still fifteen days left in the window, certainly there will be no major revolutions.”

Of the team’s goals for the season, Marotta said that “Inter have a history to defend, it’s only logical that we would be ambitious looking at our trophy cabinet.”

“We want to win,” he continued, “but then it’s premature to make judgments, especially considering that the transfer window is still open. But it’s in our DNA to always reach for maximum success.”

And the CEO confirmed that the club are in search of one more defensive signing as has been widely reported, stating that “To complete the squad we need a replacement for Ranocchia, especially because it’s an unusual season [referring to the winter World Cup break].”

“We want a competitive squad that’s well stocked with numbers,” he stressed.
