AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli has said that he feels Inter expected his team to press higher up the pitch than they did, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking after the 3-2 victory for his side at San Siro over Inter to DAZN, via FCInter1908, the coach gave an insight to where he thinks the Nerazzurri preparation went wrong for the Derby della Madonnina which was one of the most thrilling in recent years.

He said that Inter must have expected the Rossoneri to press higher up the pitch but Stefano Pioli did not choose to do that.

“Today I think Inter expected us to press higher up the pitch, instead we waited for them a bit more. We didn’t concede so much space.

“I was sure they would play two fast forwards. With Inter’s quality they can jump you even if you’re close. Inter are very strong in depth and we tried to take it away and sometimes we succeeded.”

He was not totally happy with his team’s performance as he stressed that there was a 20-minute spell where they were too relaxed and risked losing their lead.

“It was an important match, it was a direct clash. Our opponents want to show that they are superior to us, and rightly so. I liked the team a lot, 70 minutes we played like a great team. Then we relaxed a bit with the risk of conceding a goal.

“But I’m satisfied with these guys, I like their desire to improve, I’m happy. We were good at reading the game, Inter didn’t try to attack us. I like it when the team is on the pitch with maturity, awareness. Then we play against very strong opponents and it’s impossible not to concede something.”
