Former Lazio and Torino goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani believes that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi’s choice to make Andre Onana first-choice is as important for the dynamic of the team as it is in terms of the Cameroonian’s quality.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Marchegiani suggested that Onana isn’t necessarily a massive upgrade over Samir Handanovic in goal, but that Inzaghi has shown that he can really make the team his by making a decisive selection choice.

Onana looks as though he may well be first choice in goal for Inter over the rest of the season.

After having initially been given the nod in the Champions League whilst Handanovic had started all of the Nerazzurri’s first matches in the league, the 26-year-old has now also started the team’s last four in the league.

Marchegiani feels that as much as this is significant in terms of the pitch, it is especially so for the coach’s authority.

“I think that more than being a technical upgrade, this choice has helped Inzaghi to stamp his authority,” he said.

“Initially, the alternation of goalkeepers seemed like he was failing to make a decision,” he comntinued, “having chosen Onana was important in that it gives the impression that he’s actually made a definitive decision.”

“Moreover, in my opinion the Cameroonian is a better goalkeeper than Handanovic.”
