Inter suffered a disappointing and rather brutal defeat in the Derby D’Italia away against Juventus on Sunday evening.

A really damaging result away to their old foes raised questions over whether or not there’s still any chance now of Inter being able to win the Scudetto.

Two defeats this week with the addition of the dead rubber against Bayern sees a slight dampener to the tone of Inter’s recent run.

Here’s what we learned from Inter this week.

1) Marcelo Brozovis Straight Back In?

A really disappointing performance from Henrikh Mkhitaryan against Juventus should see him now replaced by a fit Marcelo Brozovic.

The Armenian lacked any sort of control and was caught out a number of times defensively leading to him being hooked before the 90 was up.

It must be said that Inter have played excellently despite the loss of the Croat through injury but now is the time surely to bring him immediately back into the fold.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a creative force and without a doubt a player who will offer Inter a differing option throughout this season but he has now done his job over the past few weeks and needs to go back to being a bench option.

2) Lack Of Cutting Edge A Real Killer

Inter were better than Juventus for the lion’s share of Sunday evening’s game.

They had more of the ball and more chances but they just simply cannot score when on top to kill games off.

Lautaro Martinez (twice), Denzel Dumfries and Edin Dzeko missed guilt edge chances all before Juventus got a stronghold on the game.

Inter are giving themselves a tougher task than it needs to be by simply giving their opponents let offs by not kicking them when they have them pinned down.

Until this changes, Inter will continue to drop points in big games where they won’t be allowed to waste chances.

3) Time To Drop Denzel Dumfries?

Denzel Dumfries is very much going through a rather damp spell.

It seems a little as if he is lacking in belief which was apparent on more than one occasion in the game with Juventus.

Where last season he would have ran at and attacked his marker, Denzel seems to be picking a safe option and even slowing down attack.

He also seems to have developed a habit of tucking himself inside rather than staying wide to allow him to get in behind the opposition.

A bit of time out from the start may do him some good to allow him to refresh.

4) Simone Inzaghi’s Big Match Record Killing His Rep

Whilst it is right to praise the excellent job that Simone Inzaghi has done in establishing Inter in Europe, his inability to win big matches in Serie A is killing him.

Five defeats already this term out of five big fixtures adds to a disappointing record that was also an issue last term when we saw Inter fall short at Lazio and in the derby, results that cost Inter the Scudetto.

Whilst we have touched on the issue that Inter’s Achilles heel is missing chances in key moments, the manager’s substitutions, although improved need work too.

This season’s revolting form in games against sides around them has already seemed to have flattened Inter’s hopes of challenging for the Scudetto.

Should Inter go out to Porto in the next round and slump after the return of the World Cup break, Simone may begin to start looking over his shoulder.

5) Inter Earn Nice Draw For Champions League Group Stage Bravery

Whilst no draw at all in the knockout rounds of the Champions League is easy, Inter have managed to avoid all of the really big fish.

The Nerazzuri were rewarded for graduating from the Group of Death with a tie against Portuguese side Porto.

A home tie first up is also a huge bonus as it gives them a chance to build a platform.

With some of the bigger sides also facing each other, it gives Inter a real chance to push for the latter stages of the tournament and perhaps give them a real chance to raise their rep in Europe.

Is a great Champions League run and a top four finish a successful season?
