Inter reached the quarterfinals of the Coppa Italia with their 2-1 win over Parma in yesterday’s round of sixteen tie, but barely deserved to scrape by in the view of Italian media.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica criticized the Nerazzurri for a sluggish display in which they needed extra time to get the job and looked to be struggling for long periods.

If Inter thought that they were going to have a fairly easy passage into the next round of the Coppa Italia against second-tier opposition, they were quickly disabused of this notion once things kicked off yesterday at the San Siro.

Parma defended well, and always posed a threat on the counter where they seemed to have the Nerazzurri beaten for pace in various areas of the pitch.

Inter showed signs of tension and frustration as they had trouble breaking down the Emilians’ resistance.

In the view of La Repubblica, the fact that Inter were able to do just this could not hide the fact that it was a fortunate result rather than a particularly deserved one on the basis of a performance that was well below par.
