Inter have been “brought back to earth” by the anticipated loss of defender Milan Skriniar after the brief high that was the Supercoppa Italiana win last week.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, who suggest that the prospect of a bitter end to the Slovakian’s time at the club has come as a reminder of the tough reality at the Nerazzurri.

Inter had much to celebrate after last Wednesday, as an excellent performance and a 3-0 victory over city rivals AC Milan brought the first trophy of the current season, in a derby against the Rossoneri no less.

However, the excitement from this big win was only to last the space of the flight home, as the next day it was confirmed that Skriniar had decided not to extend his contract with the Nerazzurri despite a substantial offer by the club of €6.5 million net per season.

The club are feeling frustrated with the situation in which the player looks to have already made up his mind to join Paris Saint-Germain next summer despite the months of contract negotiations.

PSG coach Christophe Galtier has already spoken openly about the possibility of the former Sampdoria defender’s arrival in the French capital, which has certainly been an annoyance to the Nerazzurri.

However, for whatever irritation that Inter have with the Parisians’ conduct throughout the transfer saga with Skriniar, they are bitterly aware that allowing the situation to drag on to where it is now has been their own blunder.

The Nerazzurri rejected offers worth no less than €50 million for the 27-year-old in August, and did so without the certainty that they would be able to extend the player’s contract which expires at the end of June.

Now, despite offering Skriniar a very sizeable pay raise as well as the captain’s armband in the long term and the certainty that he will be at the centre of the team and the sporting project, they have not been able to convince the player that his future is in Milan.

The timing of this virtual confirmation of an exit for Skriniar has been especially difficult for the team to bear, as it has meant that the celebrations of the Supercoppa have been cut short, and the future has been made to look uncertain and treacherous once again.
