Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his team were far and away the better side in the Milan derby this evening.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, via FCInterNews, the coach expressed his happiness with his team’s performance in a match that saw the Nerazzurri get their second win over AC Milan in just under three weeks.

Inter only won the derby by a scoreline of 1-0, but on the balance of chances this was the least that they deserved.

Particularly in the first half, it was Simone Inzaghi who dominated in terms of possession, controlling the tempo and preventing the Rossoneri from registering a single shot on or off target before halftime.

The coach was pleased with what he saw from his team on the pitch, and is hopeful that this can be a match from which they kick on over the remainder of the campaign.

“I congratulated the team on the performance, we dominated,” Inzaghi said after the match.

“We’ve won two derbies in twenty days, the first one saw us win a trophy too.”

“Now let’s focus on ourselves, let’s try to get players like Lukaku and Brozovic back fit,” he added.

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves and look forward or backwards in the table, let’s also remember that we played a very difficult Coppa Italia match against Atalanta on Tuesday.”

Of the choices made by his opposite number Stefano Pioli, Inzaghi said that “There was a lot of talk about the changes to Milan’s lineup, but I concentrated on us.”

“We came in off the back of an excellent match against Atalanta, winning a derby like this makes us very happy,” he added.

Of striker Lautaro Martinez, Inter’s match-winner, Inzaghi said that “Since last January he’s been playing at an incredible level for the last twelve months, he has a consistent performances despite us not being able to rest him much.”

“He deserves it for how he works every day, but it would undersell the team to only focus on him,” the coach noted.

“Tonight we played the kind of match where it was a pleasure to watch this team out on the pitch.”

“The only thing we did wrong was allow the match to be in the balance right until the end, but we expended a lot of energyon Tuesday because we wanted to reach the semifinal of the Coppa Italia.”

“We could have been more accurate with our finishing,” the coach noted, “but I have little to say to the guys.”

“We played an excellent match in all possible respects.”

Placing this match in the context of the Nerazzurri’s season, Inzaghi said that “We’ve had some slip-ups, but for four months we’ve been without two players in Brozovic and Lautaro whose absences would be felt by any team.”

“But in these four months we’ve reached the round of sixteen of the Champions League, won the Supercoppa, and will play in the semifinals of the Coppa Italia,” he added.

“We have 43 points, it could have been more but now we have to look ahead and focus on ourselves.”

“We have to think about ourselves,” Inzaghi stressed, “focus on what we’re doing.”

“We’ve won ten of our thirteen matches in Serie A since losing to Roma, we can still improve and we’ll try to give our best from here until the end of the season.”
