Inter CEO Beppe Marotta feels that, whilst everyone in the Nerazzurri’s squad would be deserving of a contract extension to reward their efforts, the club must make decisions about the squad rationally.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Amazon Sport ahead of this evening’s Champions League clash with Porto, via FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri executive made clear that whilst he would love to keep everyone on board, the club’s obligation is to carefully consider the future of the squad.

Inter will have a number of decisions to make as far as which players will or will not be offered new contracts at the end of the season.

Whilst Milan Skriniar has made it clear that he plans to leave at the end of his current deal which expires at the end of June, there are multiple other players whose situations are up in the air.

Moreover, the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Francesco Acerbi are only on loan for the current season, whilst there are also players whose deals expire one or two seasons down the line who Marotta and the other club directors must think about.

The CEO was asked about the matter, and replied that “Everyone in the squad would deserve a contract extension, but we can’t let our hearts decide, we have to think rationally about it.”

“We’ll do so calmly over the coming months,” he added.

Asked if he feels that the spirit of the 2010 European Treble is invoked on nights like this against Porto, Marotta replied that “In terms of the incentives and what the competition means, yes.”

“That season will forever be a part of the history of this club and repeating it won’t be easy, but we have an obligation to reach as high as possible, and we’ll do our best.”

When it was pointed out that the team could earn significant revenues from reaching the next round of the Champions League, Marotta replied that “Romanticism is what’s important on nights like this, our thoughts aren’t turning to the financial side right now.”

“Our hope is that we can give the fans a wonderful evening and get closer to reaching the next round of this competition,” he added.
