Inter are not considering sacking coach Simone Inzaghi before the end of the season but they expect him to deliver a top two finish in Serie A.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri will not make a decision on the former Lazio coach’s future in the aftermath of today’s 1-0 defeat to Bologna, and he will retain his role even if Inter are eliminated from the Champions League at the round of 16.

The Nerazzurri currently hold a 1-0 aggregate lead over Porto, but CEO Beppe Marotta has little inclination to change coaches mid-season and will keep Inzaghi on even if the Portuguese side overturn the deficit.

Despite frustration from fans after the latest defeat, which leaves Inter 18 points behind Serie A leaders Napoli, Inzaghi will not be dismissed before the end of the campaign.

However, his future beyond the summer is far from certain and the Nerazzurri hierarchy expect him to maintain last season’s second place finish, and certainly not fall out of the top four.

Inzaghi signed a new contract last summer to run until 30 June 2024, at almost €5.5 million per year plus bonuses, of which some have already been triggered.

Whilst his success in the Supercoppa Italiana and in leading Inter out of a Champions League group containing Bayern Munich and Barcelona will play in his favour, the Nerazzurri’s disappointing challenge for the Scudetto could prove costly at the end of the campaign.
