Former Chelsea, Genoa, and Southampton defender and current CFR Cluj coach Dan Petrescu feels that Inter Primavera coach Christian Chivu should take the opportunity to become caretaker coach of the senior team if it arises.

Speaking to Romanian news outlet DigiSport, via FCInterNews, the 55-year-old backed the treble-winning former Nerazzurri defender and current youth team boss to make the step up if he is called upon to take the place of Simone Inzaghi until the end of the season.

Whilst Simone Inzaghi is not yet out the door at Inter, he is certainly closer to it than he has at any point before during his time as Nerazzurri coach after three straight defeats in Serie A.

Reports have suggested that the 46-year-old former Lazio coach has a little over a week in which to save his job, and that if the next three matches don’t reverse the trend then he could be sacked even before the end of the season.

If Inzaghi were to be sacked before the end of the campaign, then the favourite to take over until the summer would be current Primavera coach and former Inter, Roma, and Ajax defender Chivu.

For his part, former Chelsea man Petrescu feels that if this opportunity comes up for Chivu then there is no reason that he shouldn’t take it.

The Romanian backs his former national teammate to find his feet at that level.

“Why not,” he said when asked about whether Chivu could make the step up.

“It could happen, even if he might not be immediately ready,” he continued.

“If he has this chance, he should take it, even if he doesn’t have the necessary experience.”

“Even if he was a great player, experience as a coach is needed to be able to coach a top club like Inter,” he added.
