Current Inter Primavera coach and legendary former defender Christian Chivu would “have no problem” stepping up from  the Nerazzurri’s youth team to manage the senior side on a caretaker basis.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Romanian would be ready to start right away if Inzaghi is to be sacked in the coming days.

Inzaghi’s future as Inter coach hangs in the balance following a dreadful run of form, with three consecutive defeats in Serie A and four in the team’s last five matches.

Whilst the 46-year-old is not expected to be shown the door right away in response to Saturday’s loss to Fiorentina, the feeling is that he could be given just over a week to save his job.

The Nerazzurri could already be plotting a longer-term rebuild under a different coach, with the likes of Antonio Conte, Roberto De Zerbi, and Thiago Motta persistently linked.

Meanwhile, reports have emerged that the Nerazzurri have also made contact with former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Southampton boss Mauricio Pocchetino.

However, if Inzaghi were to be on his way before the season is over, there is little chance that any of these coaches would be brought in to take his place right away.

Rather, the Nerazzurri would want someone who can see out the season and, ideally, produce a reaction in terms of the team’s form.

Chivu could be just the right man, as the 42-year-old already knows the club environment well from both his playing days and his current work as youth team boss.

The Romanian won the Under-19 Scudetto with the Nerazzurri’s Primavera side last season, showing why he is really starting to be well-regarded as a coach.

Moreover, there is a sense that the former Nerazzurri, Roma, and Ajax defender would have the right personality and credibility to step into the locker room and take control right away following the shock of Inzaghi being sacked.

For his part, the Gazzetta report, Chivu would be entirely open to being promoted to the senior team on a caretaker, and would be ready to start at a moment’s notice.
