Roma have made clear that they want a response from Inter-linked defender Chris Smalling to their offer of a contract extension within the next couple of weeks.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper the Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Giallorossi have set their deadline for when they want the contract extension negotiations with the 33-year-old to reach their end.

Inter have made Smalling one of their major defensive targets for the summer transfer window.

The departure of Milan Skriniar as well as the uncertain situations surrounding the futures of all of Stefan de Vrij, Francesco Acerbi, and Danilo D’Ambrosio have made it very clear that at least one or two defensive signings will be needed.

In this respect, Smalling is seen as an ideal reinforcement.

Even though the Englishman is 33 years of age, his performances this season have seen him widely lauded as one of the outstanding defenders in Serie A.

Moreover, Smalling’s current contract with Roma is set to run out at the end of June, and so his availability on a free transfer would make him a natural target.

It has been reported in the past that Smalling would be interested in a move to Inter, whilst the former Manchester United man has also been linked with a move to Juventus among other clubs.

However, more recent reports have suggested that the Englishman is now keen to extend his contract with the Giallorossi, with coach Jose Mourinho a key factor in his decision.

In any event, Roma do not want to wait much longer for Smalling’s response.

The Gazzetta report that the capital club have made clear that they don’t want negotiations to drag on for any longer than a couple more weeks.

Roma are offering Smalling either a one-year extension at the same €3.5 million net per season wages that he currently earns, or a two-year deal at reduced wages.
