Inter defender Stefan de Vrij doesn’t feel that it would be fair to attribute the Nerazzurri’s recent run of poor form in the league purely to bad luck.

Speaking to InterTV after the Nerazzurri’s 1-1 draw away to Salernitana, via FCInterNews, the 31-year-old made clear that when the script keeps repeating itself, it is not merely fortune going against the team.

On the fact of it, this afternoon’s result would seem like an obvious example of a team suffering from a bit of bad luck.

An outstanding performance by Salernitana keeper Guillermo Ochoa and the frame of goal kept the Nerazzurri from scoring a second goal, whilst Inter’s strikers were far from clinical when they got into position to score.

Moreover, the late equalizer from Granata midfielder Antonio Candreva had more than a touch of fluke-i-ness to it, as an overhit cross sailed over the head of Nerazzurri keeper Andre Onana but under the crossbar to find the back of the net.

However, the fact is that this result comes in the context of a number of similar results, like losses against Fiorentina and Spezia.

This sequence of results would clearly seem to indicate that there are details that the Nerazzurri are missing out on that they must rectify to take back control of their destiny in the league.

For his part, defender de Vrij feels that this is the case.

The Dutchman lamented that “This is clearly a period where nothing seems to be going our away, but we need to get away from just calling it bad luck, we can’t call it bad luck if it keeps happening.”

Of this afternoon’s match, the Dutchman remarked that “I think we can analyze the match however we want, but the truth is that if you don’t kill off the match, anything can happen, you can concede an equalizer straight from a cross.”

He added, “I have to reiterate, we need to kill off matches.”

Looking to next Tuesday’s Champions League match against Benfica, de Vrij said that “We have to put this behind us, we would have liked to go into it with a win but that’s not how it’s gone, but we’ll go to Lisbon and do everything to get a good result.”
