Inter Milan will extend the contract of Dutch international defender Stefan de Vrij but only if Champions League football is secured over next season.

This according to a report in the print edition of Turin based Tuttosport, as reported via FcInterNews, who add that an agreement in principle exists between two parties over a two year contract.

The former Lazio defender’s current deal expires at the end of this coming June and the report adds that the signs coming out of both camps suggest that a two year agreement worth €4 million net/season is close to being agreed.

This report follows an interview Stefan De Vrij gave after the 1-1 draw away against Salernitana at the Stadio Arechi on Good Friday, where the player confirmed that a meeting is scheduled to take place this coming week.

Contract Offer Only Valid On One Condition

However, the report makes it clear that the only condition under which Inter will proceed and actually finalize the two year deal, is if Champions League football is secured.

The Nerazzurri currently sit in 5th spot in the Serie A on 51 points, just one point off crosstown rivals AC Milan in fourth, two points off Roma in third and seven points off Lazio in second place.

Inter’s situation could become even more precarious should Juventus successfully appeal their 15 point reduction for inflating player values in order to create fake capital gains when selling players.

The Bianconeri currently sit in seventh spot on 44 points but should they win that appeal they would go up to second spot in the standings on 59 points, pushing Inter down to sixth.

Stefan de Vrij joined Inter in the summer of 2018 and has since then featured 191 times across all competitions scoring nine goals in the process.

Despite being criticized over the last two seasons, the Dutchman has been an integral part of the Nerazzurri squad winning four trophies, including the Serie A title in 2021.
