Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has been handed a fine of €3000 for insults aimed at referee Daniele Chiffi during the Nerazzurri’s Coppa Italia win over Atalanta in January.

This has been officially confirmed, as reported by FCInter1908, who report that the 25-year-old has agreed to the fine in a plea agreement with the sporting authorities in Italy, whilst Inter will also pay a fine worth the same amount.

Inter reached the semifinals of the Coppa Italia by beating Atalanta in a 1-0 win at the San Siro at the end of January.

It was not too ill-tempered of a match, although Nerazzurri striker Martinez particularly found his frustration boiling over at a few of the decision that he felt were not going his way from referee Chiffi.

Among the issues that the Inter striker took up with match official Chiffi were the fact that his team were not awarded a penalty when a shot that he took struck the arm of La Dea defender Rafael Toloi inside the penalty area.

Meanwhile, the official came in for a bit of criticism within Italian media for what was a very lenient refereeing performance on both sides, allowing a number of what looked to be fairly blatant fouls go.

Nerazzurri striker Martinez had been particularly annoyed with how Chiffi waved away a number of his appeals for a foul to be given after a few particularly physical challenges by Atalanta defenders.

The Argentine spoke angrily to the official whilst on the pitch, and then when he was substituted off in the second half aimed some angry and insulting words at the referee from the bench.

Martinez was already issued a fine for this behaviour, and now the amount has been made official.

Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri were also issued an equivalent fine for their liability in Martinez’s behaviour.
