Legendary former Inter, AC Milan, and Real Madrid forward Antonio Cassano feels that Simone Inzaghi cannot remain Inter coach past the end of the season unless he guides the team to a Champions League trophy.

Speaking on his Instagram account, via FCInterNews, the former forward attacked the Nerazzurri coach in the wake of the weekend’s Serie A loss against Monza, the team’s eleventh league defeat since the start of the season.

Cassano has never been shy about expressing his feelings about football, particularly where Inter is concerned.

The former Nerazzurri and Roma man had no problem praising Inzaghi for masterminding a 2-0 win against Benfica in the Champions League last week, but after another damaging loss in the league he has gone back to seriously questioning the 47-year-old.

From the perspective of Cassano, after a match like Saturday’s defeat against Monza, the performances in the Champions League can no longer be considered enough to paper over the constant setbacks in the league.

The former forward identifies exactly what needs to happen for Inzaghi to save his job – the former Lazio coach cannot merely make do with going far in the Champions League but must actually win Europe’s top club competition.

Anything less than this would be insufficient in Cassano’s eyes, and he believes that if the Nerazzurri do not actually win the competition then the club will be virtually obliged to sack Inzaghi as coach.

“They say that Inter played a great match in the Champions League, but that was because the players were able to manage themselves.” he suggessted.

“In the most important matches, the players are at their most focused.”

“Simone Inzaghi is turning this team into a disaster, I believe, and nobody’s convincing me otherwise, that he’s getting sacked if they don’t win the Champions League,” he added.

“Because Inter can’t be more than twenty-five points behind Napoli.”
