Legendary former Inter, Roma, Real Madrid, and Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano has praised Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi for getting things right in the 2-0 Champions League quarterfinal first leg win over Benfica on Tuesday.

Speaking on his Instagram account, via FCInterNews, Cassano wasn’t afraid to give credit where it’s due for the Nerazzurri’s big win at the Estadio da Luz, even despite the fact that he has often been one of Inzaghi’s harshest critics.

Cassano has rarely made any secret of how he’s felt about coaches and players, particularly when it comes to Inter.

On the subject of Inzaghi, the former forward has been particularly critical this season, including laying into the 47-year-old after the team got through the Champions League round of sixteen against Porto where he argued that they “didn’t deserve to scrape through.”

Cassano went as far as to call Inzaghi as “disaster” as he argued in no uncertain terms that the former Lazio coach should be sacked as he is not up to the standard needed by the Nerazzurri.

After he watched the team secure a massive first leg win away to Benfica earlier this week, however, the former forward wasn’t afraid to admit that he was admit what he saw.

Moreover, Cassano was happy to give credit for the quality of the Nerazzurri’s performance at the Estadio da Luz, for how he set the team up on the night.

“Before the match I thought Benfica were superior in all respects, and instead Inter played the perfect match and deserved to win in Lisbon,” he said.

Cassano called it “The best match of the team’s season together with the match in Riyadh [a 3-0 win over AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana], they played a brilliant match.”

“Congratulations to the guys and to Inzaghi, who I’m the first person to criticize, but this time he got it spot-on.”

“Now all the matches are do-or-die,” he noted of the Nerazzurri’s run-in, “let’s keep our fingers crossed for the return leg.”
