Simone Inzaghi could be sacked as Inter coach as early as tomorrow morning in the event that the Nerazzurri were to be dumped out of the Champions League this evening.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that this evening’s match will be decisive for the 47-year-old’s future, and that a poor showing and elimination could spell the end of his tenure in charge.

Given that Inter have a two-goal advantage in their quarterfinal tie against Benfica, they have a very good chance of reaching the final four of the Champions League, where they would meet AC Milan in a two-legged derby clash.

These exploits in Europe have been considered the saving grace for Inter and for Inzaghi this season, as the former Lazio coach has not been able to get the team in any kind of form for periods in Serie A.

Eleven losses from thirty matches in the league have left the Nerazzurri outside of the top four with eight matches to go.

With top four hanging by a thread, Inter could miss out on their primary target for the season, which is to secure a spot in the Champions League group stage next season, and with it financially vital revenues.

Accordingly, Inzaghi has found himself in a somewhat strange position, where it is very possible that the team’s league form would have already seen him out the door, but the impressive form in Europe has kept him in place.

If Inter were to get eliminated by Benfica this evening at the San Siro, squandering a two-goal advantage from the first leg of the tie in Lisbon, there could be nothing left for Inzaghi to point to.

Particularly if the performance is considered to be a bad one, the Gazzetta reports that if Inter go out tonight then Inter may not hesitate to make the decision to sack him.
