FC Internazionale Milano are officially into the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time since they won the trophy in 2010.

A mixture of resolute defending and attacking sharpness saw Inter triumph 5-3 on aggregate over Portuguese side Benfica.

Whilst Inter’s league woes continued with an eleventh league loss this past weekend, all seems forgiven now that Inter know that a tie against their city rivals awaits them as they look for a place in the final of Europe’s premier cup competition.

Here’s what we learned this past week from Inter.

1) Simone Inzaghi Long Gone If Not For Champions League Run

Inter’s run in the Champions League this year has been nothing short of remarkable.

Sure they’ve benefitted nicely from a kind draw when they could have faced the likes of Real Madrid or Manchester City but as the old saying goes you can only beat the sides that are in front of you.

Given that Inter have lost a rather pathetic eleven league games, it is solely their run in Europe that has kept Inzaghi in a job.

If Inter lose to Milan in the semi final that would spell the end for Simone Inzaghi at the club, had they not gone past Benfica he would have walked been sacked today..

2) Edin Dzeko Is Finished

Edin Dzeko simply offers nothing to Inter’s attack bar being able to score in the six yard box and on current form he can’t even manage that.

He is slow, sluggish and unwilling to run with the ball at his feet and at times that distinct lack of pace means he is not up with play to even get into the box or complete passes.

The Bosnian has had a brilliant career and been a great player and there’s no doubt he has done his all in an Inter shirt but it is definitely time now for him and club to part ways in the summer when his contract ends.

3) Giovanni Fabbian Continuing To Flourish At Reggina

Giovanni Fabbian is Inter’s next Primavera graduate who should make his way into the first team squad.

The young midfielder is enjoying a very good first season in senior football at Serie B outfit Reggina with him hammering in eight goals so far this term.

Despite his side’s recent drop in form, Fabbian has been one of the standout performers despite his tender years which begs the question of where his future lies.

Whilst he may be used in transfer negotiations this summer in typical Inter fashion, he could certainly be a good option to bulk out the squad for next year in replacement of the departing Roberto Gagliardini.

Give him a chance..

4) André Onana Breathes Confidence Into Back Line

Surely Simone Inzaghi has now learned that playing Samir Handanovic is now a terrible idea.

A good goalkeeper breeds confidence in his backline and that is something that Handanovic can no longer do.

Insert Andre Onana and the defence, even in the absences of Stefan De Vrij and Milan Skriniar, looks far more assured.

Whilst league performances from Inter have been dire of late, a real positive has been the lift in quality between the posts which is then being reflected in the body language of the defence.

Onana has the makings of being an Inter legend. The shirt is his for the next decade and beyond if he wants it enough.

5) Inter Milan To Enter A Transitional Phase

Inter are into a Champions League semi final yet they may well be playing Europa League football next year with a different manager and a totally different squad.

With the likes of Edin Dzeko, Francesco Acerbi and Romelu Lukaku, who all played their part in the progress to the latter stages of the Champions League set to be departing in the summer, it is hard to imagine the Inter we will see next term.

The manager himself has overseen Inter’s worst league campaign in five years which still might cost him his job unless Inter win the Champions League.

Inter’s squad, management and perhaps entire direction is in a state of flux at the minute. Who knows what the summer holds.

A Champions League win and a top four finish would make things easier…

Whilst serious budgetary constraints must be taken into consideration, who do you feel is most likely to take the job and who would you want?
