Inter defender Stefan de Vrij’s future currently looks to be hanging in the air, as there is little certainty as to whether or not he will extend his contract with the Nerazzurri past the end of June 2023.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInter1908, who report that it is no longer clear whether the 31-year-old Dutch international will agree to a new deal or if he will instead leave on a free transfer.

As things stand, de Vrij’s contract with Inter is set to run out at the end of June.

The club do not want to lose the former Lazio and Feyenoord man on a free transfer in the summer and have been in talks with he and his representatives for some time regarding a possible extension.

It had even been reported last month that de Vrij is close to accepting an offer of a new deal from the Nerazzurri, a two-year contract on the same wages that he currently earns.

However, there could be a stumbling block that emerges in the form of the club having second thoughts about offering a two-year deal, and only offering the Dutchman an extension of an additional season.

Now, the Gazzetta reports, it is virtually less certain than ever whether or not de Vrij will extend his contract, whilst the backdrop of the team trying to get back into the Serie A top four in order to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League casts further doubt over the entire situation.

Should de Vrij leave at the end of his contract, then the Nerazzurri will have one more vacancy to fill in defense, with Milan Skriniar already set to leave when his own contract runs out at the end of the season to join Paris Saint-Germain.
