Inter’s directors are confident that they will be able to get a deal done to sign Italy and Tigre breakout star Mateo Retegui this summer.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInter1908, who report that Nerazzurri Sporting Director Piero Auslio and Assistant Sporting Director Dario Baccin are keen on the 23-year-old and feel that all the conditions are there to sign him.
The sense given by Retegui’s two appearances for the Italian national team during the international break is that the young striker is talented but a bit raw, Tuttosport argues.
The 23-year-old was called up by Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini due to being eligible thanks to his Italian passport, as the coach felt that goals are something that are currently in short supply among the team’s attacking options.
If goals were what Mancini wanted from Retegui, the Tigre striker duly delivered, finding the back of the net in each of his first two caps for the national team against England and Malta in EURO 2024 qualifying matches.
According to Tuttosport, whilst the quality is certainly there with Retegui, who looks like he has all the physical traits needed to be a great goalscorer and natural instincts inside the penalty area, he is still clearly more conditioned by playing in South America.
As such, a period of adjustment could be needed to the European game for Retegui.
However, the step up is one that the 23-year-old is extremely keen to make, and Serie A would certainly be a natural landing spot for the striker on a number of levels.
Both Inter directors Ausilio and Baccin are confident that Retegui could come in and make an impact, whilst the player himself reportedly wants Inter despite some other interest from the Bundesliga.
Accordingly, Tuttosport report, the Nerazzurri are confident that they can bring Retegui in for next season as a major attacking reinforcement.
