Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta has once again made clear that he’s happy with coach Simone Inzaghi.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia ahead of this evening’s Serie A match against Sassuolo, via FCInterNews, the Nerazzurri CEO also updated on the future of striker Romelu Lukaku.
Inzaghi’s future has been the subject of speculation throughout the season.
Ultimately, the decision whether to keep going with the 47-year-old or part ways will come down to the directors. Chief among the key decision-makers will be Marotta.
Accordingly, there has been no shortage of speculation regarding the Nerazzurri CEO’s views. If Marotta backs Inzaghi, the coach is likely to stay, and the converse is also true.
A couple of days ago, the CEO clearly back Inzaghi to stay as Inter coach.
Moreover, a report from earlier today suggested that it is likely that the coach will remain.
Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta Backs Simone Inzaghi
Asked whether he is happy with Inzaghi as coach, Marotta replied “Of course, I’ve reiterated it more than once.”
“During the season there are moments of pressure,” he continued. “And those where the results are more positive, like the current one we’re in.”
“In those other moments when things weren’t going well, the directors always stuck close to the coach,” the CEO said.
“It was a bit tense but that’s part of the teamwork.”
Asked if this could mean that Inter will extend Inzaghi’s contract Marotta replied “We can only say that we’re happy to have him, he’s an excellent coach.”
“We will talk about the future later, he still has a year on his contract and we’ll evaluate everything, myself and the other directors.”
“There are no problems.” Marotta said.
“Now we’re staying in the present, with an important match, also in view of another huge test on Tuesday.”
Asked if this means Inzaghi will stay at Inter next season, Marotta replied “I’ve never said otherwise.”
“He has a contract until the end of next season, and there will be continuity.”
Simone Inzaghi’s current deal with Inter Milan expires at the end of June 2024.
Beppe Marotta Issues Romelu Lukaku Update
Marotta then answered questions about Romelu Lukaku’s future. The Belgian is currently only at Inter on loan from Chelsea until the end of the current season.
“He’s on loan until June 30,” the CEO observed, “and then he’ll return to Chelsea, who will be the masters of his destiny.”
“We don’t know what their plans are, or who the next coach there will be,” he added.
Asked whether Inter would like to bring Lukaku back for another season, Marotta responded that “We’ll evaluate it later, when the entire sporting staff sit down together.”
“Now we’re focused on the present, and on the extraordinary commitments that we still have to go,” he added.
