Former Lazio and Torino goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani believes that the worst mistake that Inter Milan could make this evening is thinking that their Champions League tie against AC Milan is already all but wrapped up.
Speaking to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInter1908, the ex-keeper gave his thoughts.
Inter have a two-goal advantage following the first leg of their semifinal tie against Milan.
This certainly gives the Nerazzurri a meaningful buffer ahead of this evening’s second leg.
However, there will still be ninety gruelling and intense minutes on the way.
In the second half of the first leg, the Rossoneri’s performance gave plenty of indication that they could have their say in this evening’s second leg. Moreover, Milan are set to have their star man Rafael Leao back fit and available.
The Portuguese could very well change the complexion of the tie with his pace and technical ability.
Marchegiani: Inter Can’t Get Complacent Against AC Milan
“The one mistake that Inter can make is in thinking that the tie is already wrapped up,” Marchegiani argued.
“But I don’t think that will happen.”
“This is because I know Simone Inzaghi,” he continued. “Because Inter are too experienced a team to fall into that temptation.”
Of what the biggest thing that Inzaghi has brought to Inter as coach, Marchegiani said that “He deserves the most credit for figuring out how to get the team into optimal condition for the decisive moment of the season.”
“If we only look at the results, it would be difficult to do more than what Inter will probably do at the end of the season,” he continued.
“But then if we look at the trend the team has been on, they could have done more.”
“They lacked the ability to stay in the running for the Scudetto with Napoli,” Marchegiani said of this Inter team. “But that’s a problem that other teams also had.”
And of who he expects to start between Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku, the former keeper said “I think Dzeko will start. And looking at the first leg it would be a logical choice. Dzeko had an exceptional match.”
