Inter Milan midfielder Roberto Gagliardini has been heavily criticized for his performance in yesterday’s Serie A defeat to Napoli.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, give the 29-year-old a scathing review in the player ratings for the match. Meanwhile, Nicolo Barella is commended as Inter’s brightest light at the Maradona.

There were few if any positives to Gagliardini‘s performance against Napoli yesterday.

The ex-Atalanta midfielder was given a start as Simone Inzaghi put out a heavily rotated team in view of the Nerazzurri’s midweek commitments.

Gagliardini may have been deployed for his physical and defensive attributes. However, the 29-year-old didn’t too much to stop the Partenopei from building up a rhythm in the centre of the pitch.

This was not exactly for lack of trying. Gagliardini went bundling into challenges to try and disrupt Napoli and win the ball back for Inter.

However, the 29-year-old was in fact far too zealous in this respect. Gagliardini was sent off for his fifth foul of the match late in the first half. In truth it was at least his third bookable offense.

Little To Salvage Roberto Gagliardini’s Display Vs Napoli

For the Gazzetta, Gagliardini’s display was worth only a 4/10 score.

They note that the former Atalanta man did little to help the Inter cause on either side of the ball while he was on the pitch. Then, in getting himself sent off, Gagliardini gave his teammates a massive job to do playing more than half the match at a numerical disadvantage.

More positively, Nicolo Barella received a score of 6.5/10 for his display.

The former Cagliari midfielder was his usual tenacious self even in a difficult match.

Barella’s display was not enough to prevent the Nerazzurri’s eight-match winning streak from coming to a screeching halt. However, the Gazzetta argue he was his team’s best player on a forgettable night.

The Gazzetta also give Federico Dimarco the same score as Barella.
