Inter Milan wingback Robin Gosens feels that he joined the Nerazzurri last January because he believed he could play at a bigger club than Atalanta.

Speaking to UEFA magazine UCL Show, via FCInterNews, the 28-year-old talked about his reasons for joining Inter last season.

Last January, Gosens made the switch to join Inter from Atalanta.

The German’s performances for La Dea had earned him links to a number of different clubs. The likes of Manchester City and Barcelona had been reported to be among his suitors.

However, it was Inter where Gosens ended up.

Whilst the German had been playing a high level of football with Atalanta, and plying his trade in the Champions League, there was little doubt that making the move to the San Siro represented a major leap forward in terms of quality and pressure for him.

Things have not all gone according to plan for Gosens.

Injury setbacks have meant that the wingback has not always shown his best form. Moreover, Gosens has struggled to establish a starting place for himself on the left flank.

Ivan Perisic made sure of that last season, and this time around it is Federico Dimarco who’s keeping the ex-Atalanta man out.

However, there have also been plenty of positive moments.

Especially over the last few months, Gosens has shown signs of why Inter bought him. Moreover, important goals against the likes of Barcelona and Lazio among others have really left their mark on the Nerazzurri’s season.

Inter A Step Up For Robin Gosens After Atalanta

Looking back on his move, Gosens noted that “When you change teams, you start from scratch.”

“You can have a reputation, but in the new dressing room you’re nobody.”

“You have to prove your qualities,” he continued. “It’s a big mental challenge.”

Gosens noted that “I had the ambition to get the most out of my career. I felt I could play in a bigger club than Atalanta, and step out of my comfort zone.”
