Inter could face one of either AC Milan or Lazio in the first round of next season’s Supercoppa Italiana competition.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who note that whichever of the Rossoneri or the Biancocelesti finish higher in the Serie A table will be the Nerazzurri’s first-round opponent in the newly-expanded four-team tournament in Saudi Arabia.

Next season, the Supercoppa Italiana will be expanded into a four-team tournament.

This will be formatted similarly to how the Spanish Super Cup is set up.

Previous editions of the tournament have pitted the winners of Serie A against the winners of the Coppa Italia in a one-off match.

If one team do the domestic double, then the Supercoppa has put that team against the Coppa Italia runners-up.

Next season it will be a bit different, though.

Inter Milan To Face Either AC Milan Or Lazio In Next Season’s Supercoppa Italiana

Next campaign, the Supercoppa will be contested between four teams – the Coppa Italia winners and runners up, and the two teams placed most highly not to have been in the Coppa Italia the previous season.

Napoli, as Champions, will face Coppa Italia runners-up Fiorentina.

Meanwhile, Inter won this season’s edition of the Coppa Italia. As such, the Nerazzurri will get whichever team finishes highest in the table who are not Napoli or Fiorentina.

That can only be one of two teams – Milan or Lazio.

Currently, Lazio sit second in the Serie A table. The Biancocelesti have a four-point advantage over Milan, and the Rossoneri are the only team who can catch them.

Should Milan overtake Lazio in the table, they will be Inter’s first-round opponents in the Supercoppa next season.

Meanwhile, if the Biancocelesti hold on, they will face the Nerazzurri in Saudi Arabia.

This season, Inter beat Milan in the one-off Supercoppa match. Last time around, it was Juventus who the Nerazzurri overcame in the competition.
