Inter Milan got off to a “ravenous” start in their Serie A clash with Atalanta to score two goals in the opening three minutes of a match in the Italian top flight for the first time since 1941.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter will have been hoping for a fast start against Atalanta yesterday evening.

Against Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday, the Nerazzurri had experienced anything but. It was La Viola who scored a very early goal on that occasion.

There may have been one or two worries in the Inter team that they’d start similarly against La Dea. Clearly, the drain on the team’s energy posed by the hectic fixture list makes it hard to maintain a high tempo.

The Nerazzurri knew that a result against Atalanta would be enough for them to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The team appeared keenly aware of this fact with how they started on the pitch. Not even a minute had gone by before a ruthless back-to-front move resulted in a goal for Romelu Lukaku.

Then, just a couple minutes later, Nicolo Barella doubled Inter’s lead.

A “ravenous” Nerazzurri team were playing the ball with pace and accuracy, and clearly looking to settle the match, and a top four finish, as quickly as they possibly could.

Hakan Calhanoglu looked to have added a third within just a few more minutes. However, the goal was disallowed for offside.

The fast start proved to be enough for Inter. Goals from Atalanta towards the end of both halves gave them a scare, but a second half strike from Lautaro Martinez wrapped things up.

As the Gazzetta highlight, Inter haven’t enjoyed that fast a start to a match since January 1, 1941.
