Samir Handanovic looks to be likely to leave Inter Milan when his contract expires at the end of the month.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the 38-year-old has in all likelihood made his final appearance in a Nerazzurri shirt as he captained the team in their final Serie A match of the season against Torino.
Handanovic started for Inter in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Torino.
The Slovenian customarily wore the captain’s armband.
Handanovic then came off during the second half of the match, giving third-choice goalkeeper Alex Cordaz his first appearance in his second spell at the club.
Samir Handanovic To Leave Inter Milan After Eleven Years
After the match, Handanovic was somewhat coy on his future. The 38-year-old stressed that right now the priority is the Champions League final against Manchester City. Then, he and the club will sort out his future.
The 38-year-old’s current deal with the Nerazzurri runs out at the end of this month.
According to the Gazzetta, Handanovic is prepared to leave when his contract expires. The Nerazzurri captain will call time on an eleven-year adventure that started when he joined from Udinese in 2012.
During his time at Inter, Handanovic has won five trophies – and he’ll obviously be hoping to add a sixth next weekend.
All of these trophies have come in recent seasons. The former Udinese man captained Inter to the Serie A title in the 2020-21 season.
Then, in each of the past two campaigns he has helped the team win both the Supercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia.
Through more than a decade at Inter, Handanovic has been the first-choice starter almost the whole way.
However, Andre Onana’s arrival last summer has changed that. The Cameroonian was signed as a long-term successor to Handanovic. This season, he has wasted little time in cementing a starting place for himself.
Handanovic has still been trusted with quite a few starts even since Onana established himself.
However, going forward it is Onana who is clearly first-choice.
Accordingly, the Gazzetta report that Handanovic senses that it is now time for him to depart.
